Teaching English
around the World
Teaching English around the world allows you to
experience the new and unexpected. I can personally
vouch for this, as I was working as an English teacher
for one year in St. Petersburg, Russia. I had always
dreamed about visiting
Russia – and after teaching an
English course London, the opportunity to live and
teach there was an interesting realisation of all my
life’s goals!
In
no time at all, my students and I were closely attached.
In fact, when the semester was over and the students
moved onto another class, I stayed friends with a few of
them and we met socially. I’m still in contact with some
of them today, and it’s a great mutual exchange of help
with Russian homework or asking for
Russian recipes and proof-reading of English papers
and CVs.
It’s interesting to teach English to an evening class of
adults, because everyone has their own fascinating life
history and motives for taking the class. A lot of my
students had already studied in an
English school London and wanted to maintain their
level. I made sure that they were keeping up their good
work! Some others wanted to
study English in London and were just revising and
brushing up before their arrival in the U.K. Others had
friends, family or internet lovers residing in an
English-speaking country. Preparing for a trip or just
wanting to stay in contact, it was an easier option to
study in St. Petersburg rather than going to
study English London, so I tried to help them out as
much as possible by catering the class to their langu
age needs.
Another interesting factor was what type of English the
students wanted to learn. The school was run by an
American, with all the other teachers being American too
– so I was the only teacher with a
clearly different accent! My class agreed that they
would like to focus on British English, because while a
few wanted to
study English in London, there was one woman who was
a British literature fanatic – and she managed to
persuade anyone in the class who was undecided!
